In love with Vivien of Holloway

by Mandi Gould June 21, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

For years I had admired Vivien of Holloway dresses, and when I finally noticed that they had a beautiful honey coloured yellow, I knew it was finally time to buy my first dress.

I already owned some of their separates, and the quality is superb. The new Nadine 1940s style did not let me down. The quality is excellent and the cut is just so elegant!

Shortly after acquiring the Nadine dress, they had a sale and I couldn’t resist also grabbing the Lana dress in rust. I absolutely love it.

As the Marketing Director for Ahoy Vintage Cruises, I’ve also been lucky enough to arrange a small discount. Use code “AHOYVINTAGE” at checkout and save 10%.

Spring & Cherry Blossoms in Niagara

by Mandi Gould May 3, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

We’ve had some great weather in Niagara this spring! We’re still waiting for the deeper pink cherry blossoms to come out but the white and now the softer pink sakura blossoms are out and they’re just lovely. Not to mention all the tulips! We just love it.

I’ve also been a bit obsessed with my Freddies of Pinewood jeans and jacket. I absolutely love having vintage inspired casual clothing like this for regular daily wear. These are the Beat Girl jeans.

Here’s a fun little video Geoff put together with his brand new fancy iPhone –

Geoff’s Pick: Paul Fredrick

by Mandi Gould April 27, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

If you’re looking for a stylish seer sucker suit, Geoff’s pick is Paul Fredrick. He’s been wearing their suits for years, especially the seer suckers which are the absolute best for spring and summer. The lightweight cotton is breathable and designed for warmer weather. This combination with his boater hat is his favourite go-to look for summer events.

If you’d like to check out Paul Fredrick, consider using Geoff’s affiliate link.

Erstwilder Brooches, Tips & Tricks

by Mandi Gould April 10, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

Are you familiar with Erstwilder brooches? They’re beautiful, whimsical brooches and my favourite accessories. They’re made by a company in Australia and alongside brooches, they also make necklaces, pins, collar clips, scarves, and they’ve recently added purses to their offering.

In this video I share some of my collection and also share some of my top tips and tricks.

As I mention in the video, in 2019, my dear friend Sing Lim gave me an Erstwilder brooch as a gift and I quickly fell in love and became a little obsessed! I now own about 50 pieces plus several that I’ll be trading or selling once the pandemic eases up.

Here’s a photo that shows my most recent discovery of turning brooch pairs into collar clips.

I transformed this pair of brooches into collar clips but stringing a chain between them. The earring backs also come in handy when you’re putting these on.

Necklace Converter

If you would like to convert your brooches into a necklace, the brooch converter is very handy. There are two attachments for both vertical or horizontal pins and it comes with a chain that you can also use to create the collar clips that I show in the video.

Here is a quick GIF showing the necklace converter –

How to Safeguard your Brooch with an Earring Back

To add the extra security to your brooch to safeguard against the clasp opening and the brooch falling off, you can use an earring back. I picked up a pack of earring backs and they’re very cheap so why not add that extra security? I wasn’t quite sure how it worked when I first heard people talking about it so here’s the GIF showing where you add it –

Magna Pin

And of course there’s the magna pin. This is such a handy accessory. I actually have two of them and if you can get two that have the magnets with the same poles, you can use them both together for an even stronger grip –

Erstwilder Swap & Sell Facebook Groups

In the video I also mention that there are brooch groups on Facebook. There may be others but these are the ones that I’m a part of –

  • Erstwilder Buy, Swap & Sell
  • Brooches Emporium Buy Swap Sell
  • Erstwilder Buy, Swap, Sell – USA
  • Erstwilder Shop Local
  • Erstwilder Brooch BST Canadian Edition

And of course be sure to check out Erstwilder.com, their Instagram, and their official Facebook page.

Several months ago I also wrote these tips about how to prepare for an Erstwilder release so I thought I’d include them here.

How to Prepare for an Erstwilder Release

If you’re an Erstwilder brooch fan, you’ve probably noticed that they’ve been growing in popularity! Many of their new releases sell out within SECONDS. So how can you buy your favourite brooches before they quickly disappear?

I’ve only been an Erstwilder broochie for a year, and the above photo doesn’t include three orders that are still in the mail, but even as a newbie I’ve never missed anything I’ve wanted on release day so I thought I’d share what’s worked for me.

With a little preparation–and speed–I’ve bought everything I’ve wanted including from the ever-so-popular Pete Cromer release. Since I see a lot of people have been struggling, I thought I’d share a few of my tips!

12+ Erswilder Brooch Buying Tips

1. Know the release time and double check it for your timezone! Check the counter they put on their website and triple check that you know the time for your location.

2. Know what you want to order and have your list ready. There will be no time to ponder this. Be ready!

3. Login to your account or create an account and login well in advance. I’m always at my computer at least 20 minutes early. Make sure that your address and all of the details are correct for your account.

4. Use a computer, not a phone. It’s possible to checkout quickly on a phone I guess but I would personally never trust it.

5. Do a couple of test checkouts to practice your speed. Try adding some items to your cart so you know what the process will be and take the checkout right to the last step when it asks for payment so that you’ll know what to expect.

6. If you’re going to apply any points to your order, you can prepare this in advance in your test checkout and have the code copied to your clipboard as a backup in the unlikely event that your points coupon code disappears. (I tested this several times and it never disappeared once I’d applied the coupon early, but better to be safe.)

7. Use the “add to bag” button that appears right below each item. Don’t slow down by opening up the individual product page. If you’ll be buying more than one item then you can increase the number to 2 in the sidebar that appears, which shows the items in your cart. You have to close the sidebar before you can continue shopping. (*When I inquired about limits in late 2020, they said you were allowed to buy up to two of the same item for you and a friend. This may have increased or may only be limited for certain collections.)

8. Know your payment method. Even though my payment method is usually automatically populated because I usually use Google Pay, on the last release that didn’t work for some reason so I quickly had to switch to Paypal or populating my credit card information. I decided in a split second that Paypal would be faster so I went with that. But have your payment options ready to go. Items *do* disappear from people’s carts even at this late stage of checkout so you must be speedy and prepared.

9. Have a stockist website (or two or three) open on your computer in separate tabs as backup. If for any reason you can’t get what you want from Erstwilder, immediately flip over to the stockist website. Follow all the same steps to prepare yourself on the stockist websites; login and familiarize yourself with their checkout process so that you’ll be able to be super speedy.

10. Go to the  NEW collections page and start watching the timer. Like a hawk. Don’t get distracted! Be ready to refresh the page as soon as it’s time.

11. When the items start to appear, you’ll have no idea what order they will appear in so it can be a bit of a panic. In the last release, the items actually pushed on to two pages because the essentials (earrings) ended up showing in the middle of the collection. Try to keep your cool but be quick. Click add to bag for each and as soon as the sidebar for your cart appears, you’ll need to “x” it to close it so that you can add the next item. It’s seriously always an adrenaline rush but with practice and preparation, you can do it!

12. Keep going! If anything disappears from your cart, which has happened to other people, don’t lose the opportunity to buy the others. Stay focused. Keep going through your checkout as quickly as possible. Then turn to the stockist websites you’ve had ready to grab what you missed.

If you still couldn’t get what you wanted, make sure you’ve joined all of the many Erstwilder groups on Facebook that I’ve linked to above. As people’s orders start to arrive, sometimes people find that they are not as in love with an item as they thought they were. These groups are a good place to try to find your DISO (desperately in search of) items.

eBay Tips

As I said before, try all of the Erstwilder swap and sell groups on Facebook before turning to eBay. But as a last resort, you might choose to use eBay, or evilbay as many broochies call it, to snag your most wanted items. If you aren’t familiar with eBay auctions, here are my tips:

a) My first tip is probably obvious but I’ll say it anyways: Never ever bid on an item before the end of an auction. You’ll just drive the price up.

b) Use a bidnapper program. You will never win a popular auction manually. If it’s an in-demand item, like many popular Erstwilder items, you must use a bidnapper. These programs automatically do super speedy bidding within the last 60 seconds of an auction so if you’ve ever lost something in an auction at the very last second, you have almost certainly lost to a bidnapper program. This is the one I use but I’m sure there are many of them.

Thanks for reading!

I think these are all of my tips for the moment but if I think of anything else, I’ll update this!

Thanks for reading! Let me know if you have any tips I’ve missed.

Easter 2021

by Mandi Gould April 4, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

Last year when we dressed up for Easter, it was still early in the pandemic and we certainly thought that we’d be back to in-person events by Easter 2021. That hasn’t panned out, but even so, it didn’t stop us from getting dressed up.

Leading up to this year, I mentioned around a bit online that it would be fun to use the hashtag #VirtualVintageEasterParade to share photos online. I didn’t have time to promote it too much but some people did participate so take a peruse here.

We took a little stroll in Niagara-on-the-Lake and managed to avoid getting too near anyone. All in good fun!

Geoff’s hat is from the Beau Chapeau in Niagara-on-the-Lake. For my hat, I added some large modern daisies to an old hat.

For my shoes, I finally had the chance to debut this pair of WEST shoes in champagne from Saint Savoy.

It was too chilly without the jacket but I wore two spring brooches from Erstwilder, one on the blouse and one on the jacket.

Looking forward to doing something with other humans for Easter 2022… I hope. But alone or in company, we’re sure to dress up.

Voyage on the Queen Mary 2

by Mandi Gould April 2, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

For our 10 year wedding anniversary at the end of 2019, we made a Transatlantic crossing from London (Southampton) to New York (Brooklyn) on the famous Queen Mary 2. It’s the world’s largest passenger ocean liner rather than a cruise ship, so it’s really designed to sail the seas. And it’s a much more traditional ship, built after the original Queen Mary, which has retired to the Los Angeles area.

Here’s a little video reminiscing about our trip!

We have some news coming soon all about our return to the Queen Mary 2 after the pandemic… We can’t say anything more about it just yet but I would like to invite friends to join the Facebook group called the Vintage Cruise Lounge to get the first news. 😉

Here is a panorama of the dining room –

It was wonderful to dress up and enjoy the elegance of the ship!

Virtual Vintage Easter Parade

Easter Sunday – Virtual Vintage Easter Parade

Several years ago we had the opportunity to visit the New York City Easter Bonnet Parade on Fifth Avenue. The cover photo is from that excursion. We thought it was so wonderful, and of course we’re fans of the film, so we brought our own small version of that event to Toronto for a couple of years. We were planning to revive it last year but of course the pandemic interrupted.

Instead, we turned it into a virtual even last year and it was nice to see people’s photos on Instagram!

So since we still can’t do a full in-person event this year, we’re doing a virtual event for Easter again. The great thing about a virtual event is it doesn’t matter where you are, we can all enjoy each other’s photos.

Dress up on Easter Sunday in your bonnet, hat, and other finery and snap a photo for Instagram. Use the hashtag #VirtualVintageEasterParade and look for other people using the hashtag to enjoy a little virtual Easter fun.

Join the Facebook event:

We look forward to seeing you!

Art Deco Vanity

by Mandi Gould March 15, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

Geoff restored this gorgeous Art Deco vanity for my birthday! It’s incredible. Not sure how he’ll ever top this birthday gift!

Ta-da!

Here’s the video where you can see Geoff’s restoration process and how he surprised me with it!

Now I’ve “moved in” –

Of course I had to start to fill it with my things. I like the special place at the top where I’ll reserve mainly for Besame cosmetics.

Dapper Day Review

by Mandi Gould February 20, 2021
written by Mandi Gould

Since we didn’t get to go to Dapper Day in April 2020 as we had planned, we thought we’d make a little video reviewing what exactly is Dapper Day and why do we love it so much!

We absolutely love Dapper Day. We’ve been twice to Dapper Day at Disney World and the next time we intend to go to Disneyland where there is both the park outing and also the Dapper Day Expo. Can’t wait!
